All Points Bulletin to close down servers after only 3 months.

I think the slogan on the image above pretty much sums up how people are feeling about APB at the moment. If you haven't heard the so called MMO Shooter you should probably check back roughly a year ago to the ridiculous amount of hype that was built around this game. I wish I could say I wasn't surprised to see the servers closed down so quickly but the fact that the developers are shutting down servers after only 3 months of being in operation seems a bit tragic. EA essentially invested $100M USD into an experimental MMO that had such a rediculous amount of potential and hype backing it and after only 3 months of the servers running they pull the plug? I'm interested to know what the developers had to say about the game's ultimate demise but theres been a lot of talk & rumors about the number of hackers, bugs, sprouting of free private servers, financial issues & general incompetence of the official dev team that it's almost impossible to dig deep and find out exactly what went wrong, and to make matters worse it seems like a lot of people are saying it was a little bit of everything.

Needless to say this is another game that goes to the garbage bin. Especially since once the servers close down that $50 game you bought is even less useful then an AOL trial disc.

Heres hoping developers start taking into account that there's a limit to the amount of gift wrapped crap you can put on someones plate before they're not willing to pay for it.

APB, you were a wonderful concept. Too bad no one took that potential to the level it deserved.

I remember seeing this news a few days ago. Makes me glad I had decided not to buy this game.

I surely enjoyed throwing $50 in the shitter for this game. Hopefully the rumors are true and Epic buys the game from RTW.

@MSPainter
I hope so, I didn't end up purchasing the final game myself but the fact that a lot of private servers were doing better then the official ones says a bit about the state of how things were.

What was the experimental concept? i totally missed this!

Wayward Kind said...

Wow... that is really surprising news. I would hope that SOMEone gets sued over this development as a bunch of people bought a $50 and now can't play it on the official channels.

I've never seen such a blatant display of incompetence. And the game had so much PROMISE. Agh...

Eli said...

Hahaha! Like a bottle rocket. BOOM! Whoah so cool! And then it fizzles out and hits the ground as suddenly as it began, leaving everyone confused and disappointed.

Paladin-Bias said...

Their payment model was ludicrous, but I have to give them credit for being willing to try something new.

Subscription and free to play with micro transactions can't be the only viable options.

blue syzygy said...

this is why they should build mmos with an offline mode, so if the server shuts down then at least you have a game to play.

so glad I never bought this, I thought it was bullshit there was a monthly fee tagged along with the 50$ you know?

joker said...

yea i didnt believe it either

Anonymous said...

Well its allmost better to loose 50 bucks to a faulty game, then to have a spending problem of sorts. inless you have both, then that sucks

Aspect said...

I've never heard of this game but Its kinda sad when developers can't maintain servers for dedicated fans. I just wish that they'd allow for private servers like old school starcraft and diablo.

Sona-Love said...

Yeah, I mean. The idea is good but with bizarre models and such a glitchy game, it's no wonder.

Not that it isn't unfortunate, but that's what happens.

100M wasted means this game could easily just be left for the wayside. I'm glad I didn't invest in it, although the concept the MMO brought forth is STILL a stellar idea. Who doesn't want to play complex cops and robbers online?

I say leave it to the next GTA to get it right on a console.

At least Steam is refunding for the cost of the game.

Darn, I was hoping it would be a good game!

I have no fucking clue why anyone thought this game was going to succeed in this post-WoW world anyways.

Didn't RTW spend like 100 million on this stuff?

I have a friend who honestly enjoyed it but I just couldn't see the appeal, myself.

.......I was actually thinking about buying the game but I didn't have the right money at the right time, I can't believe they shut down the servers after just three months, the game totally failed.... sucks.

I was actually interested in this game until MONTHLY FEES, then I was like NOPE.

PsyEFlatts said...

I tried the game during beta, and it was just a unoptimized mess.

Customization was p. cool though.

Jace said...

It's too bad that the game went down in flames. I've heard it was because of a few boneheaded developers that were out of the loop with the rest of the project.

Said developers also apparently had a hand in that StarWars MMO that tanked a few years back because of changes made after release.

Adrian said...

So much potential.

AlexXx said...

Too bad I didn't get into the Beta until the "key to the city" thing, and by that time everyone had already told me the game sucked.

MMO is just a bad genre. Everyone thinks it's the best genre ever and think they can make a good game in it, all because of WoW. I blame WoW for most problems in this world.
